There are a few elements that must be considered for any garage door you’re considering for a home or building, and size is at or near the top of any such list. There are a wide variety of common garage door sizes out there, including a few standard templates that are generally used across most of the industry, and knowing which to look into is beneficial if you’re in the process of finding a new door.
At Crawford Door Sales, we’re here to help with these and many other considerations for any commercial or residential garage door you’re considering for your Salt Lake City building, and we offer a wide range of different garage door materials and services to fill all your needs. In this two-part blog series, we’ll begin by looking at the standard garage door size templates out there, while in part two we’ll dig into some tips we offer on identifying the ideal size for your door and moving forward.
Single-Car Garage
The smallest standard size for a garage door is generally considered to be the single-car garage door, and as the name implies this is designed to fit a single car. These doors are typically around eight to nine feet wide, with heights ranging from six and a half feet to seven and a half feet depending on the specific model.
These doors can typically fit an SUV or van, but the fit will often be tight and you may have issues with getting in and out of your car if the door is too close to the front or back of the vehicle. If you have a larger car or truck, a single-car garage door likely won’t suffice.
1.5-Car Garage
It’s less common than the single-car garage, but you may occasionally see 1.5-car garage doors on homes and other buildings. These are designed to fit a single car with some extra room to spare, and they typically measure in at around twelve feet wide with heights in the eight to nine foot range.
Double-Car Garage
One of the most common garage door sizes out there is the double-car garage door, which as the name implies is designed to fit two cars. These doors typically measure around sixteen feet wide, with heights in the seven to eight foot range.
These doors provide plenty of room to get in and out of your car, and you’ll typically have some extra space to spare as well. This extra space can come in handy for storage or other purposes, and double-car garage doors are a good choice for most homes.
Triple-Car Garage
For larger homes and other buildings, triple-car garage doors are also an option. These are designed to fit three cars, and they typically measure in at around twenty-four feet wide with heights in the seven to eight foot range.
RV-Size Garage Doors
For those who need to store an RV, boat, or other large vehicle, RV-size garage doors are also available. These vary widely in size, but they typically measure around sixteen feet wide and eight feet tall at a minimum.
These doors provide plenty of room to get your vehicle in and out of the garage, and you’ll often have some extra space to spare as well.
