While residential and commercial garage doors often look similar or even have many of the same components, their properties and uses are very different. Both come with differing priority areas and needs for their operators, and the qualities you should be looking for in each will differ widely.

At Crawford Door Sales, we’re proud to offer a wide range of commercial garage door products, including high-speed garage doors for businesses that require them. If you’re in the market for a new commercial garage door, what are some of the top qualities you should be searching for and prioritizing? Here’s a basic primer.
qualities selecting commercial garage door

Door Material

The first and most important quality for a commercial garage door is the material being used. The most common and preferable materials here are metals such as steel or aluminum – wood materials are often great for residential situations, but they aren’t as practical when it comes to commercial needs. They’re also susceptible to cracking or splintering, plus rot if they aren’t properly sealed and protected from the elements.

Metal doors, on the other hand, require very little maintenance and are extremely durable. The last thing you want to be thinking about for your business is repairing your garage door, and this will rarely – if ever – be a concern with the right materials.

Torsion Springs

Torsion springs are designed to coil up and lighten the weight of the garage door on its various components as it opens and closes, but this purpose means they will invariably wear down after enough long-term use. Commercial garage door torsion springs must be rated for a much higher number of openings and closings than residential doors, as they potentially face a much greater load. You should be looking for springs that can hold up to between 25,000 and 50,000 cycles.

Insulation

While insulation is somewhat optional for homeowners within a residential garage situation, this isn’t really the case in a commercial garage door installation. Insulation helps protect your inventory and the inside of your business from the elements and temperature changes, plus helps make the door quieter. Finally, quality insulation actually increases the lifespan of many garage doors.

Window Considerations

The factor here that will vary most based on your individual business needs is the window placement you choose for your commercial garage door. You want to consider how much natural light you want in the space, whether you want people outside to be able to see in, and whether a view of customers as they arrive is something that’s valuable to you.
