On most days, an automatic garage door opener is a blessing. With a push of a button you can easily open or close your door, allowing you to move your vehicles in and out with ease while adding an extra layer of security to your home or business. However, all the convenience of an automatic garage door can seemingly be eradicated whenever the power goes out.

Luckily, though your automatic garage door opener may depend on electricity in order to normally function, there is an easy way to open and close your door whenever you lose electricity.

In order to manually open your automatic garage door, the first thing that you need to do is find your emergency release cord. Generally this cord is found hanging from the garage door opener rail, near the door arm.

Once you have located your cord, pull the cord down and then pull it toward the garage door opener motor head. This down and over motion will release the cord from the garage door opener’s carriage. Once the cord is released, you will have the capabilities of manually opening your door.

To manually open your door, simply grab the handle near the bottom of the door and lift it up. You can use that handle to raise and lower the door until the power is restore.

If your garage door does not have an emergency release cord, you will need to instead look for a pivot that is near that top of the door arm. Insert a Phillips-head screwdriver into the hold at the end of the pivot. You must pull the screwdriver down and back, which will release the connection between the garage door and the automatic opener.

Once the power returns, it’s important that you properly reattach the door to the opener. In order to do this, the first step is to manually raise your door. Once the door is raised, push the door opener button so that the garage door opener carriage is raised to the open position. At this point, slowly and gently start to manually close the door. The door will eventually catch the carriage, reattaching the door to the automatic opener. At this point your garage door will resume its normal function.
