The garage is an important place in any home. They serve many purposes. Perhaps the first that comes to mind is creating a safe place for our vehicles. The second most common use is likely storage. Actually, storage can probably take third and fourth place too. There are a lot of different things that are convenient to store in the garage. Some people have extra freezer storage, some keep all their sports equipment, camping gear, and/or tools in the garage.

Essentially, the garage becomes a sort of barrier or a gateway between worlds. It begins to collect everything that we want to shield from the elements, but with the stipulation that we just don’t want those things in our living space. If you’re not careful, the secondary uses for the garage can start to crowd out the first. This is why it is imperative to make a conscious effort to keep your garage organized.

Organization always takes some level of effort. That is why it’s called organization and not just “putting stuff down somewhere”. As daunting as the word may seem, the reality is that when things are organized, we are a lot less stressed. Sometimes it seems like the initial step of transforming the unorganized is much more of a headache than leaving it as it is, but think of the daily stress that messes create. Think about looking for something you really need and not being able to find it. Or, think about knowing where something is, but not being able to get to it. When your garage is organized, your mind is at ease because you know where everything is.

There are many tools at your disposal for organizing your garage space and once your space is organized, there are steps that you can take which minimize the effort necessary to keep it that way. Here are some tips that we recommend:

  • Storage sheds can be a great place to store things like tools, camping gear, or other equipment that you don’t always want in your home.

  • Attics and crawl spaces can also make for good storage space.

  • Having shelves and racks in your garage can create additional space and help create a platform for an organization system.

  • When organizing your garage, leave a small space for unsorted or unorganized items (just make sure you take care of it before it gets too big!)

  • Make sure things are accessible, keeping in mind how often they are used.

  • Create a staging area where you can unload your vehicle, but can easily get things where they are supposed to be.

These are just a few tips for keeping your garage organized. There are many resources to help generate additional ideas on the net.
