Want to face fewer garage door woes this year? Here are five simple resolutions to make that will have you enjoying a worry-free garage all year long.

Get your car into your garage.

Your garage is the perfect place to keep one of your biggest investments—your car—but what good is that if your garage is too crowded to even park your car in it? It’s time for your garage to become a truly functional space rather than an area for clutter to accumulate. In 2016, vow to make room in your garage for your car so that you can enjoy a friendlier morning commute and significantly less damage to your car. Need a few tips? Our post on 4 tips for easy garage clean-out has got you covered.

Inspect your garage door (once now, and once in six months).

Two yearly inspections—that’s all you need to ensure that your garage door keeps running smoothly throughout the year. Inspect your garage door every six months to ensure that the safety reversal feature works, that the garage door opener functions properly, that your door is balanced, that your system isn’t louder than normal, and that all hardware seems to be functioning properly. This is also a great time to lubricate any moving parts to guarantee smooth operation. When in doubt, have your garage door inspected by a professional. Make it a goal to have your door inspected at the very start of the new year, and then resolve to do the same at some point during the summer months.

Make needed repairs.

This resolution naturally follows suit when you resolve to do regular inspections of your garage door. Resolve to make the necessary repairs to your garage rather than putting them off—which will only lead to major inconvenience.

Keep your garage door from freezing.

During the winter months, if you live in a colder climate (such as here in Utah), then you’ll need to put in a little extra effort to ensure that your door doesn’t become frozen shut overnight. Our post on keeping your garage door from freezing has great tips on preventing your garage door from freezing.

Replace your old garage door.

Of course, if you’ve been using a sub-par garage door in your home for years, now is a great time to invest in a new one. You’ll enjoy not only added convenience, but also better energy efficiency and increased curb appeal.
