Finally, after a very long Utah winter that’s been extended by several weeks by significant rains, spring appears to be coming to residents in full bloom. This means many things for home and business owners, including that it’s time to assess your garage door space after the winter and ensure it’s in good condition.

At Crawford Door Sales, we’re proud to offer commercial and residential garage door service and repair that includes all your potential spring upkeep needs. Let’s go over a general checklist that we’re happy to assist you with, or happy to offer expertise on if you want to handle certain areas on your own.

General Cleaning

One of the simplest spring tasks for any garage owner is simply cleaning and decluttering the area after the long winter. Take the time to wash the important components, such as both sides of the door, and sweep up any debris in the area.

As you’re doing this, be sure to pay close attention to other areas like tracks and rollers. Make sure nothing has gotten in the way of these rollers over the course of the winter, and that they are not sticking for any reason. Finally, check the photo eye sensors on your door if you have this type of system – you’re looking to ensure there’s no dust built up in the sensors that might cause them to work improperly.

Sealing and Weatherstripping

Particularly for wood garage doors, but for any material in general, it’s also vital to check for rot, rust or any other similar corrosion damage. If there are issues with rot or water resistance, either painting or adding a water sealant is often a great move to protect your space.

On top of this, ensure your weatherstripping is properly placed and has not been damaged over the winter. This stripping is vital for sealing in your home’s cool air during the summer, preventing you from running up a big air conditioning bill.

Bolts, Springs and Cables

A six-plus-month winter offers several opportunities for these components to wear down, so you should check and make sure this hasn’t happened. Worn-down parts make your garage extremely unsafe in many scenarios, so check for signs that any such areas need replacement.

Lubrication Areas

Down similar lines, this is a great opportunity to ensure all the proper components have the right lubrication in place. In particular, rollers, tracks and hinges should all be lubricated to allow them to perform their tasks smoothly and without friction. We recommend using specific garage door lubricant, not just your standard WD-40 that you keep in the garage – these latter products may actually collect the kind of dust and debris you’re looking to avoid in the garage area.
