Messy GarageEvery year, the warm weather allows us to clean up our garages.  This year, use these tips and tricks to do a little bit of spring cleaning for your garage.  It will be just like new when you clear out the clutter and organize everything.

Pick the Right Day

Pick a day that you can block out the whole day to work on your garage.  Check the forecast and make sure that it isn’t going to rain or snow that day.   In order to do a full deep clean, it is best to take everything out of your garage onto your driveway, so that you can then go through it.  However, if you cannot block out the whole day, clean out your garage in sections and spread the cleaning out over a few days.

De-Junk

Make three different piles of your things: keep, throw out, and sell.  The keep pile is for things that you still need, and that you will use within the next few years.  The second pile, the throw out pile, is for those things that you no longer need, use, or are unusable.  Be generous with this pile, as you are trying to clean up your life.  A good rule of thumb is if you have not used it in the past two years, you probably won’t use it in the next two years, so throw it out.  The third pile is your sell or donate pile.  This pile is for things that are in good condition, but you do not use any more.  First try to sell your items at a garage sale, and then take everything you don’t sell to a local thrift store.

Use Storage Tools

Use storage tools such as shelves, bins, and racks to keep your garage organized.  When you can, put things into organized totes so that your garage looks cleaner.  A common saying is out of sight, out of mind.  This is true of the things in your garage as well.  Keeping things neat and tidy will make your garage more organized.

Label Everything

When you put everything back in your garage, make sure that you effectively organize it and label it.  That way, you can prevent your garage from becoming messy in the future.  Organize things by size and type so that you can find things better the next time you go looking for them.
