At Crawford Door Sales, we’re proud to be an honest, certified and fully reputable garage door product and service company. Our numerous happy clients can attest to this, as can our reputation for excellence across the state of Utah.

Unfortunately, like with virtually all industries where money is involved, the garage door field does contain its share of less-than-scrupulous folks. Most of us don’t require garage door repairs or products all that often through our adult lives, and dishonest scammers sometimes try to take advantage of this fact and gouge you for far more money than you should ever spend – or in the worst cases, for your personal or security information.

The primary way to avoid this? By coming to a highly experienced, well-recommended company like Crawford, with robust online reviews and a good reputation. But just in case, here are a few additional signs that you should watch out for that might signal a dishonest or, at the very least, inexperienced garage door repair service.

Excessive Prices – In Either Direction

You should be doing your research as you shop around for garage doors even if you’ve already decided what company you’ll be using, but especially if you haven’t. The primary scammer tactic within garage door repairs is the simplest one: Charging far too much for services, but assuming that some customers will not go to the trouble of comparing these with more reputable companies.

If you see a price that seems too high, simply check into it and see if this is truly the case across the industry. But at the same time, don’t be too quick to snap up a price quote that’s far too low on the other end of the spectrum – this is another common tactic often offered by scammers who don’t provide quality services, and instead speed through numerous repairs a day in an attempt to build up quantity over quality.

Lifetime Warranties

Let’s be clear: Product warranties for garage doors and their various components are common, and you should look for these as you consider various products and services. At Crawford Door Sales, most of our doors are covered both by our own warranty and that of the manufacturer, usually ranging between one and three years.

If you see companies advertising lifetime warranties on a garage door, however, this is a red flag for a scam. This just isn’t common at all in the industry, and many scammers use this language to instigate a simple method: They install or replace a part with a lifetime warranty knowing it will fail soon, then while “honoring” the warranty, tack on heavy service charges and fees that you were not aware of previously.

Lack of Branding or Marking

Does your garage door repair company show up in an unmarked van and without a uniform or other markings? This is another big red flag. All reputable companies will have every reason to display their logo and other brand indicators prominently – only someone who doesn’t want to be recognized would not.
